Signs Your Siding Needs Replacing

3 min read Siding

Siding does a lot of quiet work. It keeps water, wind, and cold out of your walls, and it sets the whole look of your home.

The problem is that siding fails slowly. By the time it looks bad, water may already be getting behind it.

Here are the signs your siding is due, especially on an older Connecticut home.

Cracks, Warping, and Loose Panels

Start with a walk around your house and look closely at the panels.

Cracked, warped, or loose siding lets moisture slip behind the surface. Once water gets in, it doesn't leave on its own.

A panel or two can be replaced. Widespread cracking usually means the whole system is near the end.

Peeling Paint Inside the House

Here's one most people miss. If paint or wallpaper is peeling on the inside of an exterior wall, your siding may be letting moisture through.

That's a sign water is moving where it shouldn't. It's worth checking the siding before you blame the paint.

Rising Energy Bills

Siding works with your insulation to hold temperature. When it fails, your heating and cooling have to work harder.

If your bills keep climbing in a home that hasn't changed much, failing siding could be part of the reason.

Rot, Mold, or Soft Spots

Press gently on the siding and trim in a few spots. It should feel solid.

Soft, spongy, or crumbling areas point to rot underneath. Mold or mildew that keeps coming back is another red flag.

Faded Color and Constant Repainting

Older siding fades and chalks over time. If you're repainting every couple of years just to keep it looking decent, that's money going nowhere.

Modern vinyl and fiber cement siding holds its color and needs far less upkeep.

What to Do Next

One or two of these signs might just mean a repair. Several at once usually means it's time to replace.

New siding protects your walls, cuts drafts, and gives an older home a fresh, finished look.
